As a history teacher I find it disgraceful that principals like Greta Hawkins refuse to allow children to learn patriotic songs honoring our American Flag. Maybe Ms.Hawkins should move to Afghanistan under Taliban rule and see how much her opinion as a woman is valued.
I know America’s history is not perfect, but our Constitution and our diversity has left us a way to correct the errors of our past.
When we teach about our Flag we should be proud that we are a nation of diversity willing to change.
The American Flag is a symbol of pride. Our troops wear it proudly on their uniforms. On 9/11 three firefighters hoisted it above the collapsed towers as a symbol of strength and perseverance.
It is this perserverance that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner in 1814 during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry.
It is this perserverance that allowed the Founding Fathers to declare our nation’s Independence.
It is this perserverance that allowed students like Linda Brown, Vivian Malone and James Meredith help end segregation in our school system.
It’s is this perserverance that allowed individuals like Medgar Evers and John Kennedy to be buried with full military honors and have the American Flag draped over their coffins.
There is not wrong with teaching patriotism.
